Gay+ is more inclusive
A post-Woke approach to dropping the ever expanding and less meaningful Gay alphabet.
The GayBCs have become increasingly hierarchal, political, and problematic. It’s time throw them out in favour of an all-inclusive version that never has to change again.
There is a very good argument for dropping the GayBCs for good. The ever expanding alphabet used to describe those persons of homosexual or otherwise non-straight identity, is simply too long to be of any use to anyone. Just listening in to any conversation where people know they are not giving a speech or being recorded will tell you that its natural to simply refer to the alphabet people as Gay. I mean, just listen to anyone trying to rhyme off the current version of the GayBCs to display their intersectional prowess is simply embarassing.
Today’s version of the list goes something like GLBTQIA2S+ (the order of the characters can be effected by the ever present political jockeying for power in the sphere). And every time I hear this, I know that each letter is getting ready to split like an amoeba to create more ‘space for people’s lived experiences’.
For those who are unfamiliar, this list currently means Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (or sometimes Allies), and Two-Spirited. By my account, a likely split coming soon is the Trans. While it was originally meant to represent Transexuals (those who have had medical treatments to change their sexual appearance), it now represents Transgender-identified persons. But the term is well missing the mark of a growing number of Non-Binary and Bi-Gendered identified persons who have not chosen to Transition but still are living their ‘truth’.
How are these identities going to be represented? What characters will be used and where in the list will they go? There already is an intersectional-hierarchy being used to decide which letters come first. Like all intersectional-exercises, it is wrought with power-plays and victimhood. Both of which of the public is growing ever more tired.
The solution is instead of wrestling with how to expand the already ten character GayBCs, is to simply drop them all and go back to the root word Gay and add a plus symbol. Then we are done.
The hurdles standing in the way are clear. There are few things more powerful and influential than someone being offended for someone else. The protective reflex of people of power and influence such as institutional Administrators, virtue-signalling Politicians, and the self-righteous folks who are ever more comfortable with the Saviour identity, will not want to give up the warm comforting Kumbaya-effect of using the never ending Gay BCs. Spouting them has become a very effective way of displaying your Woke credentials, your inclusionary mentality, or simply saying that I am better than the next person and ready to exclude them if it gets me ahead.
Using Gay+ is the start to rejecting the identity wars, woke politics, and intersectional victimhood. Using Gay+ is my way of saying let’s acknowledge we are similar in our situations enough to share an identity group while staying out of the gutter of self-pity.
